History/Overview
Normally, we criticize automakers that hardly change a car that’s been around for 15 years. But in the Audi A5’s case, the lack of updates highlights the quality of a design that debuted in 2010 – the year the A5 cabrio joined the coupe introduced a couple of years prior (which is covered in its own buyer’s guide entry).
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
All that’s new for this year’s A5 cabrio are a couple of new standard features for the base model.
Available Trims
Audi offers the A5 Cabriolet in Progressiv and Technik trim levels. Both use a 2.0L turbo engine with mild hybrid assist, a seven-speed transmission, and AWD.
Standard Features
Progressiv’s features include 19-inch wheels, auto on/off LED headlights/taillights, auto-dimming mirrors, passive keyless entry, hands-free trunk opening, heated front seats/steering wheel, leather upholstery, and three-zone A/C. New this year are standard wireless phone charging, and Android Auto connectivity; infotainment features carried forward are a 10.1-inch touchscreen, 10-speaker audio, digital gauges, and Amazon Alexa integration.
Among the A5’s safety features are rain-sensing wipers, automatic high beams, front and rear parking sensors, forward collision mitigation, lane departure warning, blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and an exit warning system.
Technik trim’s additions are laser headlights with washers, power-folding side mirrors, rear-seat USB charging ports, an upgraded stereo, top-view camera, adaptive cruise, upgraded collision mitigation, traffic congestion assist and road sign recognition, active lane assist, and hands-on detection.
Key Options
In both trims, a comfort seating package brings front-seat ventilation and neck heating. Progressiv offers an advanced driver assistance package of adaptive cruise, traffic congestion assist/sign recognition, lane assist, hands-on detection, and upgraded collision avoidance assist.
Fuel Economy
Audi’s fuel consumption estimates for the A5 Cabriolet are 9.9/7.6 L/100 km (city/highway).
Competition
The A5 Cabrio’s two competitors are also German: the BMW 4 Series, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
